SUMMARY:MCACHE Emerging Leaders Community Engagement Event - Food Gatherers
DESCRIPTION:MCACHE will be partnering with Food Gatherers to help process\, inspect\, and sort several tons of food donations from the community.  \nFood Gatherers is a non-profit organization that exists to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes in our community. The food bank and food rescue program has been serving Washtenaw County since it was established in 1988. They rescue local food and leverage state and national food resources for hunger relief. Food Gatherers provides a network of hunger relief and engages the public in the fight against hunger. In addition to the provision of food\, they advocate for policies and system changes to create an equitable food system.  \n  \nIn partnership\, we will assist with sorting food (such as produce)\, stocking their pantry with canned goods\, repackaging bulk items\, helping salvage and wash damaged products\, and working to keep the warehouse and trucks clean and food safe.  \n  \nThis event is allowing for up to 20 spots and will fill quickly so please register as soon as possible. It you attend virtually you can obtain qualified credits only. \n  \nKeynote speaker Lara Wilken\, DNP\, RN.\, Dr. Wilken is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Nursing at BGSU and author of the book chapter Role Play as an Effective Method for the Identification and Assessment of Human Trafficking. Dr. Wilken will describe what human trafficking is\, introduce the barriers to identification\, and discuss the impact trafficking has on every person\, as both a public health care crisis and social justice issue. \n  \nAttendees will view the issue through an evidence-based\, survivor-informed\, interprofessional lens and can gain a better understanding of their role and responsibility in preventing human trafficking. \n  \nDr. Wilken’s presentation will be followed by a panel of individuals from Ohio\, including a forensic nurse\, a trafficking survivor\, and a parent of a survivor. These real-life heroes will share their lived experience and explain the needs of those suffering from exploitation. \n  \nPanelist Sessions \n\nHeather Wilde\, BSN\, RN\, SANE-A: Forensic Nurse and Out of Darkness Volunteer.\nAnnette Mango: Survivor and one of the first sex trafficking victims to have her record expunged in the state of Ohio.\nCarolyn Kinkoph: Mother of Courtney Kinkoph (1992-2022). Courtney lost her life to sex trafficking in February of 2022.\n\n  \nRegardless of your profession\, please join us on April 6 to support our commitment to public good.
