The next MCACHE Community Engagement event will be on Saturday, August 6, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm, and will be partnering with Earthworks Urban Farm to help with garden maintenance and contribute to the growth of sustainable food in the community.
Earthworks Urban Farm is an extension program of the non-profit organization Capuchin Soup Kitchen located in Detroit, MI. The type of work our group will anticipate with gardening depends on the weather and needs during that time of year, but in general, we expect to assist with mixing soil, planting, seeding, harvesting, processing produce, cultivating weeds, general cleanup, and other gardening related tasks. All of this will go towards helping feed the community and create a food-just Detroit.
There will be moderate physical activity expectations for this event so please wear comfortable clothing and long pants that you do not mind getting dirty. Closed-toe shoes are required and hats, sunglasses, sunblock, and gardening gloves are also suggested. We also highly recommend bringing a reusable water bottle to last for the 2-hour shift. Volunteer work may entail the use of tools a rake, wheelbarrow, or shovel. Participants should prepare to be able to stand, kneel, walk, bend, and be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
This event is limited to 20 spots and will fill quickly so please register as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you at this event!
